What Is a Running Vest?
A running vest (or hydration vest) is a lightweight, body-hugging pack designed specifically for running. Unlike a rucksack that bounces and shifts with every stride, a running vest wraps around your torso like a waistcoat, with soft flasks in the front chest pockets and storage across the back.
They typically carry 1-2 litres of water in soft flasks (not a bladder, though some support both), plus gels, a phone, a lightweight jacket, and emergency supplies. The whole thing weighs almost nothing when empty.
Who Needs One?
Trail runners and anyone doing long runs (90 minutes+) where you need to carry water and nutrition. If your long run route doesn’t pass a shop or water fountain, a vest is the most comfortable way to carry what you need.
Road runners doing under an hour rarely need one — plan your route past a water stop or carry a handheld bottle instead. But for weekend trail runs, ultras, and long Sunday efforts, a vest is transformative. You barely notice it’s there.
What to Look For
- Fit: This is everything. A running vest must fit snugly without restricting breathing. Too loose and it bounces. Too tight and it chafes. Most brands offer XS through XL with adjustable straps.
- Flask type: Soft flasks are lighter and compress as you drink (no sloshing). 500ml front flasks are standard. Some vests include them, others don’t.
- Capacity: 5-8L for runs up to 3 hours. 10-12L for ultras and all-day efforts. Don’t buy bigger than you need.
- Front pockets: Easy-access chest pockets for flasks, gels, and your phone. You should be able to eat and drink without stopping.
- Material: Lightweight mesh that breathes. Running generates a lot of heat and a vest that doesn’t ventilate will cook you.
- Chafe points: Check seams on the shoulders and underarms. Flat-locked seams are less likely to cause problems.
Top Picks
Salomon ADV Skin 12 — £100-£120
The benchmark that every other vest is measured against. Worn by more ultra runners than any other vest. The Sensifit construction moulds to your body, the front pockets hold two 500ml soft flasks securely, and the back panel has enough room for a jacket, gels, and emergency kit. Runs slightly small — size up if between sizes.
Ultimate Direction Ultra Vest 6.0 — £90-£110
A strong alternative to the Salomon with a slightly more generous fit. The stretchy body-mapped fabric is incredibly comfortable, and the front pocket design is some of the best in the business. Popular with runners who find Salomon too narrow. Includes two 500ml soft flasks.
Decathlon Evadict Trail Running Vest 5L — £35-£45
Remarkable value. The fit isn’t as refined as Salomon or UD, and the soft flasks are basic, but for occasional trail running and long runs it does the job well. The front pockets hold standard soft flasks, there’s a phone pocket, and the back storage is practical. Hard to beat for the price.
Nathan VaporAir 7L — £80-£100
An American brand that’s gained a strong UK following. The 3D stretch mesh is exceptionally breathable, and the ExoShot flask system is designed for one-handed drinking. Excellent for hot weather running. The magnetic sternum strap is a clever touch.
