What Are Resistance Bands?

Resistance bands are elastic bands that provide variable tension throughout a range of motion. They come in two main forms: loop bands (continuous flat loops, also called power bands) and tube bands (tubes with handles on each end).

Loop bands are far more versatile for gym use. They range from thin, light-resistance bands for warm-ups and rehab to thick, heavy-resistance bands that can assist pull-ups or add significant load to exercises.

Who Needs Resistance Bands?

Everyone. Seriously. Whether you’re a powerlifter, CrossFitter, bodybuilder, or casual gym-goer, a set of resistance bands is one of the most useful things you can own.

For warm-ups: Band pull-aparts, dislocates, and face pulls are the fastest way to warm up your shoulders before pressing. Banded monster walks and clamshells fire up your glutes before squatting.

For rehab: Physiotherapists prescribe band work constantly because the variable resistance is joint-friendly and easy to scale.

For assisted pull-ups: Loop a heavy band over a pull-up bar and put your knee or foot in the loop. It takes weight off at the bottom (the hardest part) and lets you build up to unassisted pull-ups over time.

For home training: A set of bands can replicate most machine exercises when you’re travelling or training at home.

What to Look For When Buying

Type: Loop bands are the best all-rounders. Get a set with multiple resistance levels — typically colour-coded from lightest (yellow or red) to heaviest (black or purple).

Material: Natural latex is the standard. It’s stretchy, durable, and provides smooth resistance. Fabric bands (often called “booty bands”) are a separate category — they’re shorter, don’t roll up, and are designed for hip and glute activation work.

Resistance range: A good starter set covers roughly 5-50kg of resistance across 3-5 bands. Most people use the light bands daily for warm-ups and the heavy bands occasionally for assisted work.

Quality: Cheap bands snap. It’s not a matter of if, it’s when. Branded bands from reputable companies use higher-quality latex that lasts longer and stretches more evenly.
