What Is a Punch Bag?

A punch bag (or heavy bag) is a large, padded bag used for practising punches, kicks, knees, and elbows. They come in two main styles: hanging bags that mount to a ceiling bracket or stand, and freestanding bags with a weighted base. A decent punch bag turns any spare room, garage, or garden into a boxing gym.

Hitting a heavy bag is one of the best cardio workouts you can do. Three rounds on a heavy bag will leave most people gasping. Combine it with some shadow boxing and skipping and you’ve got a complete home workout.

Who Needs One?

Anyone who wants to train boxing or striking at home. If you attend a boxing gym regularly, a home bag lets you get extra rounds in between sessions. If you don’t have access to a gym at all, a bag is the next best thing.

It’s also genuinely one of the best stress-relief tools money can buy. Bad day at work? Three minutes on the bag fixes a lot.

What to Look For

Hanging vs freestanding is the big decision. Hanging bags swing naturally and feel more realistic. They need a ceiling joist, beam, or a standalone frame to mount to. Freestanding bags have a sand or water-filled base and go anywhere — but they wobble and can tip over from hard shots.

Weight affects how the bag moves. A 30kg bag is good for beginners and general fitness. 40-50kg is the sweet spot for most adults. Heavier bags absorb more force and swing less, which is better for power shots.

Fill material matters for feel. Sand-filled bags are hard and unforgiving. Textile or rag-filled bags have more give and are kinder to your joints. Some bags use a water core surrounded by foam, which mimics the feel of hitting a body.

Outer material should be durable. Leather lasts longest. Synthetic leather is fine for home use. Canvas bags are cheap but can scuff your gloves.

Size depends on your space and training style. Standard cylindrical bags (4-5ft) suit most people. Shorter, fatter bags work well for body shots and kicks. Wrecking ball bags are great for uppercuts.
