What Is a Hydration Pack?

A hydration pack is a flexible water bladder (usually 1.5-3 litres) that sits inside your rucksack with a drinking tube that runs over your shoulder. You sip through a bite valve without stopping, putting your pack down, or fumbling with a water bottle. It’s the most efficient way to stay hydrated during long rucks and trail sessions.

Most rucking backpacks have a dedicated hydration sleeve — a pocket inside the main compartment designed to hold a bladder flat against your back. The tube routes through a small port at the top of the pack.

Who Needs One?

If your rucks are under 45 minutes, a regular water bottle in a side pocket is fine. But once you’re out for an hour or more — especially carrying weight — the convenience of sipping without stopping becomes genuinely valuable. You drink more often, stay better hydrated, and maintain your pace.

Rinse your bladder after every use. Once a week, fill it with warm water and a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda, leave for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Hang it upside down to dry with something propping the opening (a whisk works well). Never store it sealed when wet — that’s how you grow mould.
