What Is an Exercise Mat?

An exercise mat is a cushioned, non-slip surface for floor-based exercises. It protects your knees, elbows, and spine during planks, crunches, stretches, yoga, and mobility work. Mats range from thin yoga-style (4-6mm) to thick fitness mats (10-15mm) designed for high-impact movements.

The main materials are TPE (thermoplastic elastomer — lightweight and eco-friendly), NBR (nitrile rubber — thick and cushioned), and PVC (durable and grippy but less eco-friendly). For general home gym use, NBR mats strike the best balance between comfort and stability.

Who Needs an Exercise Mat?

Anyone who exercises at home. Even if your main training is lifting weights, you’ll need a mat for warm-ups, cool-downs, stretching, and core work. If you do yoga, Pilates, or bodyweight training, a mat is your primary piece of equipment.

A mat also protects your flooring. Dropping a kettlebell or doing burpees on bare hardwood is a recipe for damage and noise complaints.

What to Look For When Buying

Thickness: 8-10mm is the sweet spot for general fitness. Thinner mats (4-6mm) are better for yoga where you need to feel the floor for balance. Thicker mats (12-15mm) are better if you have sensitive knees or do a lot of kneeling exercises.

Grip: The mat needs to grip the floor underneath it and your hands and feet on top. Test this — a mat that slides during a plank is worse than no mat at all.

Size: Standard mats are 180cm x 60cm. If you’re tall, look for 200cm options. Width matters less, but 65-70cm mats give you more room for side-lying exercises.

Density: A dense mat stays firm under pressure. Soft, squishy mats feel nice but collapse under your wrists during push-ups, which can cause strain.
