Free Outdoor Fitness Groups You Can Join This Weekend

By Dan Hutton 3 min read

You Don’t Need to Be Fit to Start

Let’s get this out of the way immediately: every single person at these groups was a beginner once. Every parkrun regular remembers their first nervous Saturday morning. Every rucking group has someone who joined last month.

These communities exist specifically to welcome people who are starting out. That’s the whole point.

Parkrun

What: A free, timed 5K every Saturday morning at 9am. Walk, jog, or run — there’s no minimum pace.

Where: Over 700 locations across the UK, from city parks to country estates. There’s almost certainly one within 15 minutes of your home.

Cost: Completely free. Forever. Register once online and get a barcode. That’s it.

Why it’s brilliant: Parkrun is the most inclusive fitness event in the country. The back of the pack is celebrated just as much as the front. Volunteers cheer you in regardless of your time. Many locations have a coffee shop afterwards where the real socialising happens.

Getting started: Visit parkrun.org.uk, register, print your barcode, and show up on Saturday. No sign-up for individual events. Just turn up.

GoodGym

What: Combine running with helping your community. Groups run to a community task (gardening for elderly residents, moving furniture for a charity, clearing a community space), do the task, and run back.

Where: 50+ areas across the UK, mostly in cities.

Cost: Free.

Why it’s brilliant: You get fit while doing something genuinely useful. It reframes exercise as purposeful rather than vain. The community is incredibly warm.

Rucking Groups

What: Walking with a weighted backpack. Social, low-impact, and surprisingly effective for fitness and mental health.

Where: Growing rapidly across the UK. Facebook groups, Strava clubs, and PT Tracker’s club directory all list local groups.

Cost: Free to join. You just need a backpack and some weight.

Why it’s brilliant: Walking pace means real conversations. No fitness barrier to entry. Outdoors in nature. Read more in our rucking clubs guide.

Outdoor Bootcamps

What: Instructor-led group workouts in parks. Usually a mix of bodyweight exercises, running, and team challenges.

Where: Nationwide. British Military Fitness (BMF) is the biggest chain, but independent bootcamps run in almost every town.

Cost: Varies. BMF starts from around £30/month. Many independent ones are cheaper or offer pay-as-you-go.

Why it’s brilliant: Someone else does the programming. The outdoor setting makes it feel less like a gym and more like play. Most are graded by ability.

Local Running Clubs

What: Structured group runs, usually 2-3 times per week, with coaches and routes planned.

Where: Everywhere. England Athletics lists affiliated clubs, but many informal groups exist too.

Cost: Most are free or under £5/month. Some affiliated clubs charge £30-40/year which includes race insurance.

Why it’s brilliant: Structured training with people who’ll help you improve. Social runs, interval sessions, and long runs all catered for. Most welcome complete beginners.

How to Find Groups Near You

  • PT Tracker events — browse outdoor fitness events and groups by location
  • Meetup.com — search by activity type and area
  • Facebook — search “[activity] [your town/city]”
  • Strava — local clubs often post routes and meetup times

This Weekend

Pick one. Just one. Show up, introduce yourself, and see how it feels. The worst case scenario is a free workout in the fresh air. The best case is finding a community that keeps you active for years.

You don’t need to be ready. You just need to go.
