How to Choose the Right Gym: A No-Nonsense Guide
By Dan Hutton 1 min read
What to Look For
Equipment
The equipment should match your training style:
- Powerlifting: Power racks, competition benches, calibrated plates, deadlift platforms
- Bodybuilding: Full dumbbell range, cable machines, various benches, machines for isolation
- CrossFit: Rigs, rowers, assault bikes, bumper plates, kettlebells, open floor space
- General fitness: Cardio machines, free weights, functional training area
Location and Hours
The best gym is one you’ll actually go to. Consider:
- Distance from home/work — under 15 minutes is ideal
- Opening hours — does it fit your schedule? 24-hour gyms remove this barrier entirely
- Rush hour crowds — visit during your planned training time to see how busy it gets
Atmosphere
This is subjective but important:
- Is the music tolerable?
- Are people wiping down equipment?
- Is the staff helpful?
- Can you use chalk/drop weights if needed?
Price
Gym memberships in the UK range from £15/month (budget chains) to £100+/month (premium clubs). More expensive doesn’t always mean better — it depends on what you need.
Red Flags
- Long contract lock-ins (12+ months)
- Hidden fees (joining fee, cancellation fee, freeze fee)
- No free trial or guest pass
- Broken/unmaintained equipment
- Overcrowded during peak hours with no solution
