Finding 5-a-Side and Social Football Near You
The Best Workout That Doesn’t Feel Like Exercise
An hour of 5-a-side football burns 500-700 calories. You’ll sprint, change direction, jump, and move constantly for 60 minutes. But it never feels like a workout because you’re focused on the game, not the clock.
That’s the magic of social sport. The fitness is a side effect of having fun.
Football specifically builds cardio endurance, agility, coordination, and leg strength. It’s interval training disguised as a kickabout.
Where to Find a Game
Powerleague and Goals. The two biggest 5-a-side chains in the UK run leagues and casual bookings at centres nationwide. Most have multiple time slots throughout the week.
Local leisure centres. Many council-run centres offer 5-a-side pitch hire and some organise their own casual leagues. Often cheaper than the big chains.
Facebook groups. Search “5-a-side [your area]” and you’ll usually find groups looking for extra players. This is one of the most common ways people find games.
Meetup.com. Football meetups are consistently among the most popular categories. Turn up, get put on a team, play.
PT Tracker events. Browse social sport events near you, see who’s going, and RSVP directly through the app.
Don’t Have a Team? No Problem
Most social leagues welcome individuals. You sign up, they put you on a team, and you play. No experience level required for casual leagues — there’s usually a range from “haven’t played since school” to “plays Sunday league.”
If you’re nervous about your ability, look for leagues specifically labelled “social” or “recreational.” These prioritise fun over competition.
Starting Your Own
It’s simpler than you think:
- Book a pitch — most centres let you book a single session for around £40-60. Split between 10 people, that’s pocket change.
- Find 10 people — text friends, post on PT Tracker, share in local groups. You only need 10 for 5-a-side.
- Set a regular slot — “Every Tuesday at 7pm” becomes a fixture people plan around
- Keep a reserve list — people drop out. Having 12-14 on the list means you always fill the pitch.
Use PT Tracker’s events feature to manage your group, track RSVPs, and send reminders before each game.
Other Social Sports to Try
Football not your thing? There are plenty of alternatives:
- Basketball — fast-paced, great cardio, courts available at most leisure centres
- Netball — huge social scene in the UK, mixed leagues are increasingly popular
- Badminton — surprisingly intense, easy to pick up, cheap to play
- Tennis — doubles is inherently social, and many parks have free courts
- Touch rugby — all the running, none of the tackles. Growing fast across the UK
The Social Side Matters
Here’s the thing nobody talks about enough: regular social sport is genuinely good for your mental health. It’s structured social interaction, physical activity, and play — three things most adults don’t get enough of.
You leave feeling better than when you arrived. Every single time.
Find a game on PT Tracker this week. Your body and your social life will both thank you.
